CASE STUDY:
The Quadrant - Network Rail
Client: Network Rail
Location: The Quadrant, Milton Keynes, UK
Project: Installation of 29 Era Hoozone Acoustic Booths
Design & Supplier: Era Screens
Duration: 4 Weekends (Out of Hours)
Project Overview
Network Rail, a leading entity in the UK's rail infrastructure, required the installation of 29 acoustic booths in their Milton Keynes office, The Quadrant. These booths were intended to create private, soundproof spaces within the office’s open-plan layout, enhancing employees’ ability to handle calls and focus on their work.
Objective
The aim was to install 29 high-quality acoustic booths across various floors at The Quadrant, while minimising disruption to the office’s daily operations. This involved meticulous planning and coordination with Network Rail’s facilities team to ensure the project was completed efficiently over four consecutive weekends.
Challenges
The project presented several challenges, starting with a tight schedule that necessitated completing the installation over weekends to avoid interfering with regular office hours. The large, multi-story nature of The Quadrant posed logistical hurdles, especially in transporting materials and equipment across different floors within limited weekend hours. Additionally, while working during weekends mitigated disruption to office staff, it was crucial to minimise noise and disturbance to nearby residential areas. Lastly, the acoustic booths had to adhere to strict standards for soundproofing and durability, requiring careful assembly and precise installation.
Approach
Pre-Installation Planning:
We began with a thorough site survey to understand the layout and specific needs of each floor. Working closely with Network Rail’s facilities management, we developed a phased installation plan that optimised the use of the four weekends. All materials and tools were prepared and staged in advance to streamline the installation process.
Weekend Installation Strategy:
-
Weekend 1: Focused on delivering and assembling booth components, with materials strategically distributed across the necessary floors.
-
Weekends 2 & 3: Teams were organised into smaller units to simultaneously work on different floors. Booths were installed in phases, with each unit assembled, securely anchored, and fitted with necessary electrical and ventilation systems.
-
Weekend 4: We completed final adjustments, conducted thorough inspections, and made any minor tweaks or finishing touches. The areas were cleaned and restored to their original state, ensuring no trace of the installation process was left
Results
The project was completed on time, within the four-weekend schedule, without delays or overruns. Working exclusively during weekends ensured there was no disruption to Network Rail’s operations. The installation of all 29 acoustic booths met the highest standards for soundproofing and aesthetic quality. Network Rail expressed high satisfaction with both the execution and the quality of the booths, which have seamlessly integrated into their office environment.
Conclusion
This project underscored the importance of detailed planning, efficient execution, and close collaboration with the client. The successful installation of 29 acoustic booths at The Quadrant demonstrates our team’s dedication to delivering high-quality, timely solutions even under challenging conditions. Network Rail now enjoys enhanced privacy and noise control in their open-plan office, contributing to a more productive and effective work environment.
